Welcome to St. Columban School!

Dear Friends,

Thank you for stopping by our website. We also invite you to visit our school or to contact us by phone or email if you have any questions! If you are not already enrolled  in St Columban School I invite you to explore the opportunity to provide your children with a Catholic education as part of our community. We would love to have you join our family!

My name is Barbara Barreda and I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the principal of St. Columban School. St. Columban School is a ministry of St. Columban Parish and shares its mission . St Columban school was founded by the Religious Sisters of Charity in 1956 and their charism along with that of our namesake, St Columban,  continues to form our community today.  We seek to assure that our students excel academically and develop leadership skills  that allow them to be a positive force of change in the community and the world. The Columban Fathers put it like this, “We are called to “transform the lives of others, give hope and enrich the world.” It is our goal that the students of St Columban School are ready to fulfill this mission.

St Columban School has a strong history in the Garden Grove community and serves a multi-cultural student body. As a Catholic school, we have a unique capacity to provide students with a challenging academic environment, which has a strong spiritual and moral foundation that will enable the students to become responsible, productive citizens. I am passionate about equipping our students with the knowledge, skills, leadership, and faith they will need to be role models in our community and our world. The Mission of St. Columban School reflects the need for today’s student to be a strong moral and ethical individual who applies Gospel values as they interact with others both on and offline.  We are also committed to service learning and strive to help all students grow in compassion, understanding, and respect for all peoples.

St Columban School recognizes that the needs of students have changed and embraces the call to equip the students for their future. America’s system of education was built for an economy and a society that no longer exists.

"In the manufacturing and agrarian economies that existed 50 years ago, it was enough to master the “Three Rs” (reading, writing, and arithmetic). In the modern “flat world,” the “Three Rs” simply aren’t enough. If today’s students want to compete in this global society, however, they must also be proficient communicators, creators, critical thinkers, and collaborators (the “Four Cs”)"

As we strive to meet this challenge we are building a strong technology infused academic program. We have embraced the Next Generation Science Standards and understand the importance of a well rounded education that embraces the sciences and the arts. We seek to meet the needs of all students and the focus on assuring that the students of St Columban School not only excel in the four C’s – communication, creativity , critical thinking and collaboration- but that they are compassionate individuals who  lead by example.

Best regards,

Barbara Barreda
